Essential Oils are an Effective Approach to Management of H. Pylori

Helicobacter pylori infection is extremely common worldwide: more than two-thirds of the world’s population is infected with this organism. H. pylori is recognized as the major etiological factor in chronic active type B gastritis, gastric ulcers, and gastric cancer

Analyzation the activities of 60 essential oils against H. pylori P1 and identified 30 oils that affected growth.  Lemongrass, cinnamon bark, vervein, and carrot seed were the most effective A marked inhibition of H. pylori P1 viability was  observed after 1 h, indicating that the effect is very fast. The most active essential oil was carrot seed oil. The inhibitory effects of the essential oils were even more pronounced after 24 h of contact,

Cinnamon Bark oil Eradicates H. pylori

Turkish researchers looked at various essential oils to discover the minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) of lemongrass, cinnamon bark, clove leaf, lemon and thyme essential oils alongside clarithromycin, against H pylori. In other words, the essential oils were mixed with clarithromycin to check their efficacy rather than being tested against H pylori on their own.

The research team reported the following results. MIC values of lemongrass, cinnamon bark, clove leaf, lemon and thyme essential oils with clarithromycin against H pylori were determined as 62, 8, 125, 500, 62 and 0.125 lg/ml, respectively, the lowest value being the most potent. From strongest to weakest, the essential oils ranked as follows:

• Cinnamon bark

• Lemongrass

• Thyme

• Clove

• Lemon and lime

The researchers drew the following conclusion from their study:

The use of cinnamon bark oil in H. pylori eradication as itself or by combining with antibiotics is a promising idea.

Lemongrass cytotoxicity in colon, neroblastoma, and cervix cancer

The essential oil of Cymbopogon flexuosus (Eastern lemon grass) showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity in colon (502713), neuroblastoma (IMR-32), liver (Hep-g-2), and cervix (SiHa) cell lines with an IC50 value ranging from 4.2 to 6.5 μg/mL. The same oil induced dose-dependent growth inhibition, decrease in the ascitic fluid volume, and total ascites cell count in solid and ascitic Ehrlich and S-180 tumor models in mice.
